Fantastic to see university students playing at Polo Wicklow

IT was fantastic to see university students playing in the Intervarsity Tournament at Polo Wicklow recently (3 May), UCD (University College Dublin) and RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons Ireland) beginners and the more advanced novices putting to the test the work of almost every Saturday morning since last autumn.

And with match commentary provided by Polo Wicklow founder Mickie Herbst the tournament was non-stop action from the first throw-in by umpire Siobhan Herbst to the prize presentations in the clubhouse. The tournament wins were split evenly between UCD’s novice team taking their league against RCSI, and the beginners from RCSI besting UCD.

“It was fantastic to see 12 university students playing,” said Siobhan Herbst just before the prize presentations. “Everyone who has dedicated their Saturday mornings to come down (to Polo Wicklow), the whole way from Dublin to learn how to play our wonderful sport, it’s worth it, I think you can agree.”
